Pardon our Dust: The Olympia Habitat Store

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Over the next few months you will see a transformation of the Olympia Habitat for Humanity Store. The process will involve us completely redoing the floor plan within the Store. We are moving to a look very similar to our newest Store in Yelm. We are hoping to accomplish a better flow for you, the customer, and make donations easier to make. So each Wednesday and Saturday we will be making progress towards our goal!

If you have any questions about the Store remodel or would like to volunteer on this project, please contact Caleb White, Regional Store Manager at 360-956-3456 extension 11.

Itching to pound nails and get dirty?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Dear friends and volunteers:

It’s been a few months since we finished construction at Shepherd’s Grove in Tumwater, and if you miss building houses as much as we do, you must be dying to get your hands on some tools.

While we can’t offer you a spot on the construction site just yet, we wanted to tell you about a great opportunity to volunteer at the Olympia Habitat Store. Our Olympia Store is getting a serious makeover, and we need YOU to help us move racks and paint them, build new storage for doors and windows, re-shelve and re-organize merchandise, and set-up displays to make them more attractive and accessible to customers. The Store will look completely different when we’re done, but we can’t do it without you!

Starting November 3rd and running through the end of the year, we need your help (and a lot of it!) on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Pack a lunch and stay all day, or just come for part of the day; we’re flexible. We welcome individuals and groups (up to 10 people), so feel free to bring some friends.

Please sign up for work days in advance through our online system, VolunteerUP! or by emailing volunteer@spshabitat.org.  Please note that all new volunteers must attend an orientation and sign a waiver of liability before starting work.

If you have any questions, or any problems using VolunteerUP!, please do not hesitate to contact our volunteer coordinator.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Store News: New Staff & Yelm Opening!

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

As many of you know, we are opening a new Habitat for Humanity Store in Yelm. This has been a very exciting transition for us. The Yelm Store will be opening on October 10, 2012 with a Grand Opening Celebration on October 12th & 13th! Come on by for a free hot dog and chips while checking out the new store.

The Yelm Store Manager is long time Olympia Store employee Robert Chamberlain. Robert came to us nearly six years ago and was a very important reason for the success of our Olympia location. Under his leadership we will continue to see great things out of him in our Yelm Store!

We would also like to welcome Sean Kelly to the team as Store Manager of our Olympia location. Sean comes to South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity with an amazing background in retail management as well as vast knowledge in the hardware industry. We are delighted to add him to our team. Welcome Sean!

Hope to see everyone at our two Habitat Store locations!

Here is a great example of things you can hear about by following us:

Birdhouses and Barbecue Saturday

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Please join us this Saturday, May 5, 2012,  for our third annual Birdhouses and Barbecue down at the ReStore. Last years event was a huge success with over 40 birdhouses built and painted on that day. The cost of the event is $5 per birdhouses built, the barbecue lunch is free for everyone. Bring the kids down and create mom a unique Mother’s day gift she will not soon forget. All proceeds from the event go straight into our building project!

ReStore Academy: Window Installation Class

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

On Saturday we hosted our second ReStore Academy class. ReStore volunteer Don Robinson taught the class on how to properly install a window commonly found in the ReStore. Since our windows can come without a flange and can sometimes be tricky to install, this class was great.

When asked, one attendee stated, “The class was outstanding. I really learned a lot more than I thought I would coming into it.”.

The ReStore does plan on hosting these courses once a month. Our next class slated to be held at the end of April will be an electrical class on how to install light and a two switches being taught by Sam’s Electric. For more information on the ReStore Academy, please email Caleb White, ReStore Manager at caleb@spshabitat.org

Thank You Whirlpool!

Monday, March 12th, 2012

Whirlpool does a lot for South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity. They donate appliances for our homes, free of charge. On occasion we will get a special gift from them. That gift comes in the donation of appliances for the sole purpose of selling them in our ReStore. As you may know, all proceeds from sales at the ReStore go directly to our building projects. So large donation of appliances can go a long way in our mission to provide housing for the low income.

This past February, Whirlpool made a great donation of ranges and range hoods to the ReStore. These brand new products are marked to half of what they are retail! With such great savings you can win by saving a ton of money during your kitchen remodel all while giving back to Habitat for Humanity. So thank you Whirlpool for continuing to give back year after year. These items will go fast, so hurry down to the store while you can. We are opened EVERYDAY from 9:00 Am – 6:00 PM.

ReStore Academy starting soon!

Friday, February 17th, 2012

At the ReStore we are always trying to find ways to better educate our customers and the general public about recycling and ways to reuse items. This led us to start a new free series at the ReStore, the ReStore Academy! The academy will be monthly to semi-monthly classes taught by real contractors or experts in their fields. It will allow you to learn how to install a door or window, or some creative uses of recycled materials for those creative people!

Right now we have two classes accepting participants, which are listed below: If you are interested attending this free class please RSVP to Caleb White, Restore Manager, by sending an email to caleb@spshabitat.org

Installing a Door taught by Warren Anderson of Anderson Construction, Saturday, February 25th from 11AM – 1PM.

Window Installation and Techniques taught by Don Robinson, Saturday, March 24th from 11AM – 1PM.

If you are interested attending this free class please RSVP to Caleb White, Restore Manager, by sending an email to caleb@spshabitat.org
